Is there a caterer who can save you money?

My aim is to save you money and to spread a bit of kindness.

We all need food to survive. We don’t have a choice – or do we?  Can a caterer make a difference?

Suits have choice caterer
A quote from Harvey Specter of Suits – ‘You always have a choice’ got me thinking.
(For those of you who have never heard of Harvey Specter, he plays the smooth, over-confident and hugely successful lawyer in the TV series Suits, with memorable one-liner quotes).

  • Does this apply to food? Yes it does. Some people are forced to make a choice between paying the rent or eating. Others are making choices to eat cheaper fast foods instead of more nutritious ones.
  • Does this apply to a caterer? Of course it does. From baking a cake, when you choose the recipe, ingredients and utensils you will use, to choosing a caterer to provide your wedding breakfast, you always have a choice.

If you have no financial constraints then the choice you make is relatively straightforward. The problem occurs when you know what you need or want but can’t afford it.

The important thing to remember here is that you may still have a choice – there may be other ways for you to get what you want. There may be others that can help (caring caterer’ ). You may have to ‘think outside the box’ and/or compromise, but there are often alternatives for you to consider.

I’m here to help you look at the alternatives.  Hopefully, as this site grows, others will come up with suggestions too.

Let’s spread some kindness.

Question Time Universal Credit Caterer

I watched Question Time the other week when a member of the audience was trying to explain to Chis Grayling how people are living day-to-day.  She pointed out that some parents have to make the choice whether ‘……to get a school jumper or have a tooth taken out at the dentist’.

Audience Member – “It’s not enough. It’s not enough on the base level that none of the Tory Government seem to be on – the base level of how people are living day-to-day, feeding children, trying to clothe them, trying to decide whether to get a school jumper or have a tooth taken out at the dentist. This is the reality of life.”
I find it incredible and so sad that in 2017 people have to make choices between paying their rent and eating or heating. Undoubtedly people suffering with financial hardship have their choices limited, but those who are better off can choose to help.

I’m devoting a section of my website entitled Caring Caterers to those caterers, chefs, restaurants, cafes, food suppliers, etc. who help people in financial hardship. It may be that you donate to foodbanks; offer free meals to the homeless; encourage customers to pay in advance for a coffee or meal for a homeless person; distribute excess food to people in need; or even offer employment to the homeless. Please let me know who you are and what you do so that others may be encouraged to follow your example.

A little about me – I trained as a chef and have worked in the catering industry for over 40 years. I’m married to Jane (my soulmate) and have two beautiful nineteen year-old daughters. My daughters have recently left home to go to university and I’m currently suffering with the empty nest syndrome.  This is why I have started my blog. I’ve had the catering-online website for many years but it is only now that I have time to work on what I have dreamt about in the past.

One of my daughters is living in self-catered halls of residence and we have frequent conversations on what she is eating – I’m sure other parents have similar conversations!  I worry that she is not eating properly and she tells me she has so little time.  Yet again the question of choice comes in. She has a choice (albeit limited by cost and equipment) – she chooses to prioritise work and socialising over eating. I must add that I do understand her conflicting priorities as it is essential for students to use their first few weeks making friends and establishing friendship groups.

The first article I have developed for this site (selfishly perhaps!!) is ‘Eating at Uni’ with the hope that students will consider their choices and see that there are nutritional and tasty meals that can be prepared very quickly.  Please tell me what you think.

Do you dread going to work?  Looking for a new job?  Are you looking for a step up the career ladder?  Do you want temporary work to boost your income? Are you a caterer who has just left college? One of my plans is to produce a page specifically dedicated to catering jobs. It will be completely free for both job seekers and catering businesses with catering vacancies. My intention is to save you money when you need to recruit, and also to save job seekers time by having a page dedicated to catering vacancies.

Want to make some money? Another plan I have for this site is to develop a classified advertising page for catering related items. Private advertising will be completely free. If you are a caterer and have equipment to sell, this too will be free. Obviously I will not be listing the menus of every caterer and the catering equipment of suppliers for free, but this will all be explained as soon as I have developed the page. Any suggestions you have for this page would be welcome.

Well these are my plans. What do you think? Have I left anything out?  You now have a choice in what you do now. If you enjoyed this post, I’d be very grateful if you’d help it spread by sharing it on Twitter or Facebook. Thank you.
