Do you want to help the homeless this winter? It’s easier than you thought. Read on for three campaigns for caterers that would welcome your involvement.
Homelessness has increased by 75% since 2010 (Shelter, 2019). There are a number of caterers that carry out charitable works. Click here to see my website page that showcases some of them. To find ways to help the homeless and other disadvantaged people, please carry on reading this blog. Charities are actively seeking caterers to take part in their campaigns this winter.
The first campaign that is looking for caterers is the Winter Warmth Campaign which starts on 1st November 2019. The charity Only A Pavement Away is appealing to caterers to start fundraising and collect donations of coats, blankets and sleeping bags. These will then be collected from designated collection points. The campaign will run across a number of UK towns and cities. The items will be distributed to rough sleepers ahead of the cold weather. The charity has also started a fund for people to donate to the cause.
Greg Mangham, the Founder and Chief Executive of Only A Pavement Away, said
“Winter is a terrible time to be on the streets, but in the run up to Christmas when most people are feeling festive and gathering with family and friends, having no home is not just a practical tragedy, but an emotional one. I hope Winter Warmth will not only keep those on the street warm, but also let them know that they are not alone, and that people care about them.”
The charity is also hoping to raise enough money to pay for 3,500 hand-warmers to give out over the campaign, which runs from 1st to 30th November 2019.
Caterers wishing to get involved with this campaign should visit Only A Pavement Away.
2. The Great Big Christmas Turn On
Do you want to be in the Book of Guinness World Records?
A festive campaign is looking for caterers to join in. It hopes to raise thousands of pounds for people in the hospitality industry who have fallen on hard times. The Great Big Christmas Turn On is an attempt to light more than 1,000 Christmas trees simultaneously across the UK. Each participant will receive a commemorative Guinness World Record certificate if the record is broken.
If you want to take part it will cost £99. For this, you will receive a smart plug with simple instructions and you will also receive guidance on how to make the most of this marketing opportunity.
Mark Lewis, the Chief Executive for Hospitality Action, said:
“When I think of Christmas I think of spending time with family and friends, of presents under the tree and food on the table. But for many people the holidays can be a time of pain and loneliness.”
The record attempt is being organised by Vivid Hospitality Solutions and The Caterer, in support of Hospitality Action.
Caterers wishing to get involved in this campaign should visit The Great Big Christmas Turn On.
Do you want your restaurant to help the homeless without it costing you a penny?
The principle behind this campaign is simple and involves little administration. Customers eating at participating restaurants have £1 added to their bill. The donations do not affect your VAT returns. Electronic tills record the donations. All you have to do is collect the total amount at the end of each month or at the end of December, and pass it to the charity. 100% goes to local charities.
Richard Bacon, StreetSmart Patron and Broadcaster said:
“This has got to be the smartest, most effective and enjoyable way of doing a little something for homelessness that’s ever been conceived of.”
So what’s stopping you from taking part?
Caterers that have eating establishments and want to get involved should visit StreetSmart.
How to Make a Difference this Winter – Join a Campaign for Caterers
This winter is going to be very cold, according to the latest newspaper headlines. Some state that it will be the coldest winter for fifty years. Regardless as to whether these forecasts are correct, if you are sleeping rough you will be cold. A record number of homeless people died last year. An estimated 726 homeless people died in England and Wales in 2018. Why don’t you join one of the campaigns for caterers to help these people? Just helping one person will make a difference.
As i begin to think about Christmas and everything that needs to be done, I recall the old rhyme:
“Christmas is coming,
The goose is getting fat;
Please put a penny
In the old man’s hat.
If you haven’t got a penny,
A ha’penny will do;
If you haven’t got a ha’penny
God bless you.“
The words of this Christmas rhyme remind us to spare a thought (or a donation) for those less fortunate, as we prepare to indulge in our Christmas celebrations.
As caterers, the lead up to Christmas tends to be a very busy time for us. The campaigns listed above shouldn’t take up much of your time. What’s more, they won’t cost you much (if anything) either.
Please let me know if there are any campaigns for caterers that I have omitted.
